For my birthday this year, I decided to finally do something that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.
I decided to finally step out and start a business… well, more than a business, but a space for all girls to call home. A space where they can be encouraged to disrupt the status quo and change their world. A space where girls are valued and celebrated, where they feel they can be who they want and be free.
I decided that this birthday would be different from any other birthday I’ve ever had: this was the time to start Smile On Me.
Instead of the traditional birthday gifts, I asked my friends and family to bring hygiene products that I would donate to girls across the city. Luckily, for me, all my friends were on board.
I decided to have my birthday party at Franklin Park Bar because my friend Desiree took me there once and I absolutely loved it. Mind you, there’s nothing really unique about this bar. Honestly, I just really like their hot dogs and beer menu. Plus, there’s an outside space that needs no reservation, and for summer babies living in New York, that’s the best thing you could ask for. Plus, it’s only a $12 UBER ride to my house!
That day was even more special than I expected it to be! I got to ring in a new year in a way I never dreamed of, and I got to see the best side of all my friends. Their generosity is truly inspiring and it was incredible to witness. With the support from friends, family, coworkers, and new found friends, we collected more than 150 hygiene products! Together, we began to build this foundation for all girls; brick by brick, product by product. Our goal is to work together and holistically address the various needs of the diverse population of this great city.
Thank you to everyone who came out to support me and my dream, you are truly loved!
